Last Minute Minders is an organisation that was established by a provider for providers. As we all know the landscape of the Irish childcare industry has changed dramatically over the last ten years with the introduction of capital funding and the advent of the ‘super crèche’, and with 80,000 more childcare places promised over the next ten years the industry looks to have a very healthy future.At the moment all childcare providers in Ireland must operate in accordance with the childcare regulations. These are regulated by the pre-school inspector’s unit who perform spot-checks on a regular basis. If, on these spot-checks you are found to be in breach of these regulations, your service could be found to be non-compliant. At best, this is recorded and parents have access to these records through the freedom of information act, at worst the pre-school inspectors have the authority to close your centre. One of the most common breaches dealt with is an inaccurate adult/child ratio. The new regulations that will be introduced in September 2007 have been further reviewed so that now this adult/child ratio is more comprehensive and now states that each childcare provider must make provision even in the event of emergency staff absences. The regulations also state that providers also need a document in place outlining their emergency staff cover policy.
